I'm writing both of you. I've been using GNU Octave for a while now for numerical and signal processing algorithm development I've gotten through consulting, and it's an AWESOME package. I wanted to ask about it's licensing however. Trust me, I'm well familiar with and a follower of the Free software philosophy. My understanding is that all of Octave, including liboctave, is GPL, _NOT_ LGPL (except of course for the base PD scientific libraries like LAPACK under the hood (unless you've derived from the original LAPACK)). I'm going to argue for LGPL'ing just liboctave (not the interpreter). This would allow coders like me to really build up octave's functionality while working on proprietary projects, which should be beneficial for everyone. My position: I am currently starting a robotic/computer vision assembly line research project for a large corporation. What I would like to do is develop algorithms in Octave using dynamic libraries, then link them into a final industrial application for my client. However, this cannot be done without liboctave being LGPL'd so that it can be linked to proprietary software...believe me this corporation is _not_ going to allow me to GPL their manufacturing process. Octave provides a wonderful base of functionality, however for this project I would be adding (and recontributing back) to libOctave: -3D visualization -A large number of linear image processing filters -A large number of non-linear image processing filters -Various iterative optimization algorithms -Various edge detection algorithms -Various surface fitting algorithms I'm sure others are in my position as well. This is the entire reason FSF invented the LGPL...to allow Free development tools like GCC with glibc to be useful on non-free projects. I view and use Octave not as an application, but as an algorithm development platform with a valuable associated library. I was wondering what you thought of the idea of changing the license. As a sign that I'm not all just talk, attached is a snapshot of a OpenGL visualization tool I wrote for Octave. It's currently crude, but it does provide basic functionality. I declare it in the public domain. If I can find a way to use octave for this project, a more sophisticated version would be the type of benefits you'll see.
