By default matlab (installed on GNU/Linux) uses Emacs key bindings. So Ctrl-a returns to the start of the line. If you change the key bindings to Windows, Ctrl-a selects all text. But never mind about that. Combining the input/output window and adding the ability to select text is worth 27 Ctrl-a's and 9 Ctrl-e's. And if you don't agree with me, Ctrl-c to you.
