Ummm, sorry for replying my own mail.
I have just checked the license of a previous version (2.0) of vtk. They
had a restrictive patch clause then.

When I look at the current license now, the last point means one could
fork the code but isn't allowed to name it vtk. That should be fine with
the GPL. If vtk would be trademarked one weren't allowed to use the name
either.

Assuming the license is ok, wouldn't vtk a very good candidate for
ocatve's graphics?
