There is also the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT): http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/wessel/gmt.html This should be good for a lot of back-end functionality. Basically, there is ALOT of code out there freely available for very high end workstations, written by scientists and engineers for Sun's, HP's etc. x86 really didn't show up on their radar screen until very lately, so linux is way down the list of supported platforms.
