I see you are trying to find a plotting tool for octave. I can suggest 
grace (xmgr 5.0). It has lots of features and can be controlled with a 
library (via a named pipe). I already wrote octave functions (.m) that 
use grace for plotting functions (plot, labels, legend, title, some 
subplot, ...). There are still some bugs, but it was working not too bad 
with 2.0.13 / grace 5.0.1. Anyone interrested by the code (GPL of course).
