I don't think there are many missing messages in the archives.  In my
own personal saved-mail files, I only see two messages with the
subject you referred to, so if there were more messages in the thread,
then the archiving failed and they were not delivered to me either.
Possible, but would probably only happen if the messages were not
delivered to the list at all.  Maybe you are recalling an off-list
discussion?
