I installed Xcode Tools from Installer Disk 1 (Mac OS version 10.4, AHT version 2.5, Disc version 1.1, 2Z691-5518-A) and X11 works. I had help from the octave-help-list with respect to .bashprofile and .bashrc (see below and also recent post by Joe Koski; files are best connected via symbolic link if this is the correct terminology).
