There is Andy's sparse matrix package in octave-forge, or there is a new sparse package in a separate development branch of octave itself. At this point you are probably still better going with Andy's stuff as the development tree for the sparse code in octave has a bit of leakage of the gnuplot split, that prevents all use of graphics. However, if you want to try it the CVS tag is "sparse-merge". As for Andy's stuff, if you have octave-forge install, you should have it. Type "speye(3)" and see what it gives you.
