During a make in the octave directory...

...

oct-rl-edit.c:32:31: readline/readline.h: No such file or directory

...

make[2]: *** [oct-rl-edit.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/local/octave-2.1.50/liboctave'
make[1]: *** [liboctave] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/local/octave-2.1.50'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I hunted down and found readline on my system.  How do I get make to 
learn where it is?
