First of all note that octave as shipped with FC3 is broken, because the lapack library it is linked to is broken (look for this mailing list archives for solutions). If you did fix it already, there is a possibility that octave-forge 2004.11.16 is too new for octave-2.1.57 and you may want to fall back to octave-forge-2004.09.09.
