I replaced the cygwin.bat call of "bash --login -i" with this: rem edd 26 Mar 2002 switched to rxvt (also from cygwin) rem bash --login -i rem this trick from the mailing list (John Wiersba, 29 Jun 2001) rxvt -g 80x70+200+50 -fg #000055 -bg #eeeeee -fn "Courier-11" -sr -sl 5000 -vb -e /bin/bash --login -i I'm sure you can adjust the color arguments for foreground (fg) and background (bg) to your liking. I can't remember whether rxvt is in the default Cygwin installation, if not I highly recommend adding it. The default terminal is pretty terrible. Rxvt allows cut and paste to windows apps with is nice.
