On windows it's *.dll, on Unixen its *.mexSomethingOrOther Octave: *.oct For both of these, to execute a script or function, one types in its name at the Octave prompt: for example, Main.m is executed by typing in octave 1> Main More complicated examples involving functions are also possible. Read the manual for more information. Maple is a symbolic computation tool. Octave is a numerical computation tool, so you should expect some differences in function and features.
