There is a bug in the current Apple c++ compiler that causes some of the templates in octave to behave improperly; the bug should/will be fixed in the next gcc release. For the time being, I'm still using Yellow Dog Linux on my G4 cube in order to use octave. I'm hopefull that OS X will be ready-for-primetime sometime in 2002, but it's not there yet as regards octave.
