That prompted me to do more investigation of GnuPlot and I found that there was a GnuPlot demo file which did exactly what I wanted. The files that I wanted I was able to find in http://ortega.cs.ucdavis.edu/~byrav/Mozz/gnuplot.demo/ This was the world.dem demo file.
