Ahh...thank you both for your reply.  I did read that you *must* have
gnumake, but I assumed since we don't have the compiler option installed
on our Sun there would be no sun make on our system.  Sure enough,
/usr/ccs/bin with Sun's make is ahead of /usr/local/bin with gnumake in
my PATH.  Sorry to waste you guys' time...trials of a newbie unix
sysadmin/programmer.
