It is true for me as well, with version 2.0.9 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) compiled
from source on RedHAt Linux 4.2.

I reproduce this as well...

Or no brackets at all:

octave:8> a=b=c=d=1;
octave:9> [a b c+d]
ans =

  1  1  2
              
I agree that this can be considered a bug...
