Subject: spacing between tics

I am running gnuplot 3.5 (pre 3.6) patchlevel beta 315. How to change 
the spacing between tics on x-axis and y-axis? The problem with this 
gnuplot is that when using more that 3 subplots, the y-range display 
will cluster.
