Another test using hp710,hpux9.03,32MB ram :

tic;eig(rand(250,250));toc

This time octave is slower by 5% (33.5 s v.s. MATLAB's 31.9s).

In inv(rand(400,400)), octave was faster by 25%. So, the speeds are
comparable. You need to specify what kind of operations are in your
problem.
