The reason I asked was (apart from seeing that you used it) because with 
iTerm I see something going into the direction of your problem, although 
not as serious: Running your commands in iTerm takes over 3 minutes of 
CPU time (versus 14 sec when run in Terminal) and during that time, 
memory use grows at a rate of 1MB/s up to about 220MB RSIZE / 550MB 
VSIZE. But then it starts displaying normally. I tried an xterm, too, 
and it is slightly worse than iTerm (4 min CPU).
