FWIW -- I did compile octave-2.1.64 on redhat 9 without any problem.
I used "--enable-shared --disable-static" (in case that might matter).

Anyway, it appears to be a compiler problem rather than an octave
bug -- compiler should not segfault no matter what you throw
at it.
