Somebody with more Mac experience than me will have to help you. On other machines, imread works for octave-2.1.40 and octave-2.1.48 --- I don't know why it wouldn't work for 2.1.46 on os x. I haven't been able to install octave on os x 10.3. Can any fink experts explain why system-xfree86 doesn't provide x11? Gnuplot works fine with Apple's x11, even with term x11. I don't have x11sdk.pkg available which the X11 FAQ claims will fix the problem. I tried building a dummy x11 package which provides x11, but I'm not savvy enough to get equivs to build, never mind rolling my own package from scratch.
