Moreover, another thing is that if you are using testing (sarge) (i was), then octave-forge currently installs its files in the wrong directory---testing has octave 2.1.36 but octave-forge installs itself in 2.1.35--(this is an open bug), and which means that you will not see "mod" in your octave even though octave-forge is installed.
