Because it requires recognizing the syntax in Octave.  You might be
happy if just this one feature is added.  There are many more, and it
seems that it would be difficult to follow every change in gnuplot
syntax.

Eventually, the gplot/gsplot/gset commands have to go.  It was a bad
decision to support them in the first place, but I caved in to some
pressure from my coworkers who were already heavy gnuplot users and
thought it would be nice to have the same syntax in Octave.
