From bug-octave-request at bevo dot che dot wisc dot edu Mon Aug 19 15:12:28 2002 Subject: Installation error on DEBIAN3.0 at VirtualPC5.0 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Marco_M=F6ller?= To: Cc: Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 06:35:24 -0500 Dear Octave-Team! Dear Connectix-Team! I found a problem, when installing OCTAVE2.1 (www.octave.org) in GNU/Linux Debian3.0 (the stable "Woody") located in a VirtualPC (www.connectix.com): I marked to install the package "octave2.1", which installed Version 2.1.35 then. It also installed, according to the dependencies-definition a package "atlas2-3dnow 3.2.1ln-7" out from a Subdirectory called "blas2". This did not work first, as I am working on Intel P4 System. I could fix the problem by deinstalling this atlas-package and instead installing "atlas2-sse2 3.2.1ln-7" (try and error - and I succeeded!!). I am a real novice in Linux, and therefor thought to start with DEBIAN, because of this dependencies-definitions, which sounded best in comparison to the rpm-based Distributions. I, up to now, only use Linux, where I do not have affordable Software for MS-WinNT4. Further, as a biologist I only want to get my data analysed, and I do not want to become a real OS-freak. Well, it still might be interisting for you, that my small DEBIAN3.0-System is running as a Virtual PC (pc-emulation running under Win32 OS or Mac OSx by www.connectix.com), so I can start my small Linux-tasks from time to time in an extra "Linux-Window" to work out my stuff, without leaving my main WinNt4 System. - A wonderful combination! I do not know, wether the "Virtual PC for Win Version 5.0" translated wrong processor-version information into the virtual world (I never had such a problem before) and forced the AMD-atlas-version to be installed instead of the SSE2-Version, or the dependencies definition in the octave2.1-package produced this error (I have no idea about the Linux internals at all). So, I decided to post this message to you both (the Octave-Team and the Connectix-Team) as an informational note (not a "support call"), for the case you want to take care about this problem with the wrong processor detection while installing this software. Thank You both very much for Your excellent Software!!!
