All the symbols that are coming up undefined in the final link are
supposed to be defined in libcruft/libcruft.a.  What's in that file?

I've been told that there is a bug in GNU Make 3.77 that causes
trouble for Octave.  Are you using that version?  If so, the suggested
fix is to back down to 3.76.1.
