I ran into this problem while trying to compile octave 2.0.1 on my Debian Linux 1.2 system. Since I did not want to mess with the gcc specs file (part of Debian package) I took the second option and created an empty libieee.a file in the src directory. However running 'make check' gave a number of failed tests all related to ieee functions (isnan, isinf, isfinite). Investigating a bit further showed that the corresponding configure tests also failed because libieee is missing. Adding libieee.a to /usr/local/lib solved the problem with configure. After rebuilding octave (luckily on a 200 MHz Pentium) all tests in 'make check' passed. Repeat-By: --------- See above. Fix: --- In the README.Linux emphasize that libieee.a has to be added in a place where configure can find it. Addition has to be done before(!) configure is run.
