Thanks for the Debian bug report. I'll CC: it to the Octave bug-list (as John
once asked me too.)

However, the bug report is little sparse and does not provide enough
information to track the problem down. Could you try to run

	octave --norc
	octave --no-init-file
	octave --no-site-file

and maybe

	strace octave    (or  strace -o /tmp/oct.log octave)

and tell me what the those reveal?
