I learnt that Octave uses both LAPACK and LINPACK for its linear algebra part and have the question why. LAPACK contains both LINPACK and EISPACK, should its functionalities conver all those in Octave? I also noticed that the similarities between matlab and Octave both in their language and in their functionalities. How do they differer other than one is "free"? Looking forward to hearing from you, -Jing
