I have tried to compile octave on a machine running 386bsd then netbsd
the compilers I have used are gcc 1.39 , gcc2.3.3 then gcc 2.4.0
I have used f2c and gmake  the octave I have used is 
-rw-r--r--   1 269      system    1094558 Apr 19 15:21 octave-0.71.1.tar.z
